16-year-old Ari lives with his mother in Reykjavík. When she has to leave Iceland for a new job, Ari is sent back to the small fishing town of his youth. While his former best friend, has become a young woman stuck in a tricky relationship; his father has become a victim of the financial crisis.

La mise en scène de Runarsson est toujours délicate, précise, trouvant toujours les bons cadres, la bonne distance, le bon tempo. Entre paysages glaciaires, personnages volcaniques et mise en scène tempérée, Sparrows trouve son bel équilibre.

Ainsi décrit, Sparrows semble n’être qu’une chronique adolescente mélancolique de plus. C’est tout l’inverse. Le cinéma de Rúnar Rúnarsson est trop nuancé pour s’en tenir aux classifications par genre. Il serait fastidieux d’en énumérer les raisons : elles sont partout.
